Student leadership is a central part of life at St Peter’s School. Across departments, year groups and whole‑school initiatives, we offer a wide range of opportunities for students to develop confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility. We believe leadership is learnable, and our students play a vital role in strengthening both school and community partnerships.
Sixth form student leaders
Sixth form student leaders support key areas of the school during lunchtime, including the Astro-field, library, canteen and general patrol. They build positive relationships with younger students—supervising football games, assisting with lunch queues and helping to keep shared spaces tidy.
Student council
The council is organised by year group, with each Head Student overseeing one year. They run meetings, discuss upcoming events and proposed changes, and work closely with tutor‑group representatives. Students apply for these roles through a written letter, and one representative per tutor group is selected.
Peer mentoring and accredited training
Year 12 students also support younger pupils in Nurture through Eddie’s Peer Mentorship Project, helping young people with autism and learning disabilities develop skills and prepare for adulthood. Miss Furbank is ASDAN trained and able to deliver a certified qualification in peer mentoring and leadership, offering formal recognition for students developing these skills.
Prep leaders
Post‑16 students will support Year 8 and Year 9 Prep groups by leading activities, discussing punctuality and behaviour, and acting as positive role models. This initiative aims to strengthen daily support for younger students.
Subject‑specific leadership
Selected Year 9 students are taking part in a structured training programme to become Sports Leaders. Through practical and theoretical workshops, they develop the skills needed to lead, officiate and manage sporting events. These leaders will help expand sporting opportunities across the school and wider community.
In Music, older students support younger musicians in extra‑curricular activities. In KS3 lessons, one or two Music Leaders assist with music technology, helping classmates learn new techniques quickly and confidently. In Drama, sixth‑form students supported Matilda rehearsals—helping choreograph scenes, offering acting advice and assisting staff throughout the production process.
English works closely with the library, where students act as Library Leaders. They help run the desk during breaks and lunchtimes, check books in and out, reshelve returns and support the librarian. Sixth‑form students also contribute through paired reading with younger pupils.
In Geography, two Year 12 students mentor a group of Year 11 girls during tutorial, delivering revision sessions focused on confidence‑building and effective study strategies. The department is also establishing an eco‑committee as part of the Eco‑Schools initiative, creating leadership opportunities across year groups. Year 12 students also volunteer at History Club, supporting KS3 students with tasks and helping staff run weekly activities.
