Clubs and opportunities

At St Peter’s, we want every student to take part in extra‑curricular activities. We believe these experiences enrich young people by introducing them to new interests, helping them develop valuable skills, and giving them opportunities to collaborate, grow in confidence and discover more about themselves.

We are proud to offer a vibrant programme across Music, Drama and PE, with students regularly involved in clubs, performances, fixtures and special events. Many other departments also contribute through the LAE curriculum, Learning Outside the Classroom opportunities and our Stretch and Challenge Clubs.

This creates a diverse and exciting range of activities — from Astronomy and Cookery to Gardening and Archery. There truly is something for everyone.

Each year, many of our students also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Combined Cadet Force, gaining leadership skills, resilience and unforgettable experiences.

At St Peter’s we are proud to offer Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

We currently offer Bronze to Year 9 students, Silver to Year 10 students and Gold to Year 12 Students. We are a Direct Licensed Centre which is a type of organisation which holds a licence to deliver DofE programmes to the young people they work with, on their own premises.

The DofE is all about going the extra mile – gaining new skills, pushing yourself physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time, you’ll gather friendships experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.

What is it all about?

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a personalised award where young people design their own programme with support from our staff, which can be tailored to suit their personal circumstances, choices and local provision. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is balanced, progressive and enjoyable whilst being achievement focused demanding high levels of commitment. There are three levels of DofE programme which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.

A DofE programme is a personal challenge to push your own boundaries and not a competition between others. It is also achievable by any young person who chooses to take up the challenge regardless of ability, gender, background or location.

Whilst we offer the programme at St Peter’s it is voluntary and young people choose to do this and commit some of their free time to undertake activities. There are four key elements a Physical section, Volunteering section, Skills section and an Expedition section. At Gold there is also a Residential section in addition to the expedition.

The DofE Lead at St Peter’s School is Mrs Powell

The Combined Cadet Force develops key personal qualities such as responsibility, perseverance, resourcefulness and self‑reliance through leadership training, military skills and adventurous activities. Kimbolton CCF has a national reputation for excellence.

St Peter’s joined Kimbolton CCF in 2011, giving our students the opportunity to take part. The CCF has three sections—Royal Navy, Army and RAF—and St Peter’s students belong to the Royal Navy Section, led by Lieutenant Robson (Mr Robson, Head of Business Studies).

Training and Activities

Training takes place every Thursday afternoon on Kimbolton School’s extensive campus. During warmer months, students also benefit from access to nearby Grafham Water for sailing, kayaking and powerboating.

All cadets take part in an annual 48‑hour Field Weekend at a military or adventurous training site, and many also attend single‑service residential camps during school holidays.

The Royal Navy Section is known for its high standards and supportive atmosphere. Cadets follow a structured training syllabus and can access a wide range of specialist Royal Navy (CCF) courses and expeditions. Activities include classroom learning, drill, range work, leadership tasks and outdoor challenges.

The CCF is not a recruiting organisation; membership carries no obligation to join the Armed Forces.

Joining the CCF

Each June, as older cadets leave, we invite applications from Year 9 students to begin training the following September (in Year 10).

  • No late entry is permitted.
  • The programme requires a two‑year commitment.
  • Students who continue into St Peter’s Sixth Form may remain for a further two years and can take on leadership roles.

Places are extremely limited—around five per year, with a maximum of 14 cadets across Years 10–13.

Training runs from 1.30pm to 4.20pm on Thursdays (occasionally starting at 1.00pm for sailing), with return to school by 4.50pm.

Experiences and Opportunities

St Peter’s cadets are warmly welcomed into the Kimbolton contingent and quickly build strong friendships. They enjoy exceptional experiences such as:

  • Visiting a Royal Naval Base in Portsmouth
  • Sleeping on a naval ship
  • Piloting a boat in the Solent
  • Visiting HMS Victory
  • Sailing, canoeing, raft building and powerboating
  • Paintballing and range work
  • Additional trips, exercises and specialist courses (usually free or low‑cost)

Why Join?

The CCF offers a prestigious and highly rewarding opportunity that builds confidence, leadership, teamwork and resilience. Participation strengthens personal statements and CVs, helping students stand out when applying for further education or employment.
