Students aged 16–19 who are studying at a school or college (but not at university) in England can apply for a bursary to help with education‑related costs.
A bursary is money that a student, or their education or training provider, can use to pay for items such as:
- clothing, books and other course equipment
- transport and lunch on study days
There are two types of 16–19 bursary:
Vulnerable Student Bursary
A student may receive a bursary worth up to £1,200 if one of the following applies:
- the student is in, or has recently left, local authority care
- the student receives Income Support or Universal Credit in their own name
- the student is disabled and receives both Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and either Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in their own name
Discretionary Bursary
A student may receive a discretionary bursary if they need financial support but do not qualify for a vulnerable student bursary.
How to Apply
Students should read the policy document on the left of the page and then complete the application form, ensuring that all required evidence is collected. The completed form and evidence should be submitted to the Student Support Co‑ordinator.
The school will write to the student to confirm the decision and the amount awarded. Payments will be made in six instalments across the year, dependent on the student’s attendance and behaviour in school.
For further questions, students should contact Mrs Matthew.
